CELEBRATION OF CLAUDE CHANA,   AUBURN, CALIFORNIA

CELEBRATING CLAUDE CHANA – MAY 16, 2025
Why May 16th in Auburn?
Back in 1848, French pioneer Claude Chana set out with a group of French-Canadian trappers and native Americans to meet with James Marshall, the discoverer of gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma. Along the way, one of the French-speaking trappers suggested they take a shortcut –one that would change everything/change the course of history. It was there that by sheer chance, Chana literally struck gold and found the first nuggets outside of Coloma in a ravine near what is Auburn today. His discovery marked the beginnings of the city of Auburn and cemented his legacy as a founding figure of the town.
Join us on May 16th from 2–4 PM – Everyone’s welcome!
We’re thrilled to host a special celebration honoring Claude Chana’s legacy. Auburn City Historian Carol Cramer and Catherine Bonnefoy, Honorary Consul of France in Sacramento, will welcome guests. Even more special—Chana’s descendants are traveling from France to join us for this memorable occasion.
Historian and author Claudine Chalmers will take us back in time to share the remarkable story of this adventurous Frenchman. To wrap up the afternoon, I’ll share a few final thoughts on the enduring legend of Chana.
Come celebrate Auburn’s roots and the legacy of a true pioneer
Dessert and drinks are offered by the City of Auburn and by EFSAC

About EFSAC : Education Française de Sacramento – FRENCH CLASSES FOR KIDS
As part of its educational mission, EFSAC has undertaken essential work in remembrance: anchoring in collective memory the historical importance of French-speaking pioneers, whose adventures helped shape the landscape of our region.
The visit from the CHANA descendants reminds us that the bonds woven between peoples span centuries. As a FLAM (Français Langue Maternelle) association, we share these same values of transmission: offering children the opportunity to discover and learn about the rich Franco-Californian culture unique to the Sacramento region
